Prairie Land Conservancy to Host Speaker on Farmland Preservation
The Prairie Land Conservancy, the local conservation land trust in western Illinois, will host their initial annual meeting on Thursday, March 11, at the Red Ox Restaurant located at 1302 W. Jackson St Macomb. Registration and social begins at 5:30 pm with dinner at 6:00pm. Cost of the dinner is $14.00 and RSVPs are due by March 8, 2010 by calling 309-833-4747.
The public is cordially invited to attend. The evening will begin with a buffet dinner and a keynote speaker, Mark Cochran of The Sangamon Conservancy Trust. The Prairie Land Conservancy [PLC] will hold a business meeting after the speaker.
Cochran is a volunteer legal advisor for the Sangamon Conservancy Trust and is a private attorney with Bellatti, Barton, Hamill and Cochran, LLC in Springfield, IL. The Sangamon Conservancy holds permanent easements on about 3,500 acres in central Illinois, the vast majority of which is prime farming ground. Federal estate and income tax considerations, as well as local property tax relief have played key roles in the securing of these easements.
Cochran negotiates conservation easements for the Conservancy and will speak about protecting farmland for future generations through permanent conservation easements. Conservation easements enable land owners to maintain ownership of their property, while donating or selling the land usage rights of their property in order to protect conservation values.
Community members wishing to attend just the speaking program may plan to arrive at 6:45 pm. The meal and meeting will take place in the private dining room of the Red Ox. During the business meeting, PLC will review their accomplishments in the last year, elect officers and a board of directors, and adopt their annual budget. The meeting is open to members and non-members.
Further information may be obtained by emailing the PLC at prairie at macomb.com or call 309-833-4747. For more information about the PLC activities visit their website at www.prairielandconservancy.org.
People needing special accommodations may call the number above by March 9, 2010.
