Greetings,
I am working with Lisa Gruver on the Farmers' Market team. Lisa is focusing on the Link card/ credit/debit swipe machine set up. I am concentrating on getting a children's tent set up, every week if possible, so we can offer games, projects and art for kids. I think a "kneeler" table for coloring each week would be a good weekly basic activity. I also envision string games, jacks, knot tying, poss. bird/insect/butterfly identification, kids' songs with motions etc. I am hoping to contact many groups (scouts, 4H, sororities, etc) to sign up to help each week. The more groups involved, the better the exposure for the farmers' market. I could also ask for sponsorship from service organizations for supplies for each week's projects.
I'm also helping to round up music as often as possible, starting with high school students who I hope will volunteer to play some folk/jazz/oldies/big band type music. They could put a music case out for tips. We may be able to find a little money to pay them.
Lisa and I discussed our ideas with the head of the Farmers' Market, Ron Coons, and he is completely on board. He is also working out regular demonstrations from various restaurants. We discussed contacting the U of I Extension office for possible programs or demonstrations from master gardeners etc.
I'm looking for help in lining up activities, sponsors etc. I also would like to find 2 or 3 people to alternate with so I don't have to be in town every Saturday. I am hoping to get a pop-up tent for the kids' corner. Please email me if you are interested in helping....even if you just have ideas and can't work at the market....or call me at 833-3748.
Thanks, Jamie Lane
